Happy Thanksgiving Canada!
Last year when we were celebrating family recipes with Project STIR I learned a lot about different holidays, and decided to feature some of them here on the blog… for instance Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October. So I invited April Harris to tell us a little about it and share some of her delightful recipes. Enjoy!
Canadian Thanksgiving is coming up this weekend.
Officially the date is the second Monday in October every year but many families will enjoy dinners on Sunday too. I grew up in Canada and while I now live in England, my family and I make it a point to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving every year.
Canadian Thanksgiving celebrations are not all that different to those in the US with turkey generally the centerpiece of the meal. Many of the usual Thanksgiving dishes feature – mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing and vegetables. Green bean casserole is more of a US dish, but in recent years I’ve begun to include it as it’s just so darn tasty. And for my husband, who loves spinach, I always make my Lighter Creamed Spinach dish.
Pumpkin Pie, pumpkin cakes and cheesecakes are served for dessert. I always make my pumpkin pie to the recipe on the back of the Libby’s tin. That’s how my late Mom made it and I still like it best.
One of my new traditions is serving a special Thanksgiving breakfast – Pumpkin Gingerbread Muffins always feature on the menu.
Canadian Thanksgiving may not be quite as big a thing – for us Christmas is still the biggest family meal of the year – but it’s an important yearly celebration and one my family and I always enjoy.
